Toorongo Falls is one of two closely located waterfalls near Noojee in Gippsland, Victoria. The other nearby waterfall along the same hiking trail is Amphitheatre Falls. Both falls are situated along the Tooroongo River. The falls, which I visited in very late Autumn were along the Tooroongo River, which in itself was a great photography subject due to the abundance of river rapids, moss covered rocks and the beautiful river itself.
The Tooroongo River is called the big and little rivers depending on which arm you see. Just below the Tooroongo Falls flows Little Tooroongo River which eventually meets up with the flow from Amphitheatre Falls which is connected to the larger arm of Tooroongo River. In this article I have not differentiated between the two.
There is a great hiking trail that leads to Tooroongo Falls, which includes a well built steel bridge that goes over the river. There are great views and photography all along this trail. It is well worth the 40 minute hike which can be quite an exertion, since the trail climbs steadily upward before reaching the falls. The great views are not only of the river, but of the flora along the way. Wildflowers, mushrooms, and ferns abundantly line the trail.
Once you get to the falls themselves, you can get pretty close courtesy of a viewing platform. You are also rewarded with a rest by the bench seats provided on the platform. This gives you the chance to catch your breath in more ways than one. The view is pretty spectacular.
The feeling you get when you pause to take in the falls is one of awe. It is such a beautiful natural masterpiece and a great photography subject. It frames great in a picture because it is neither too tall or too wide. It is one of my personal favorite subjects in Victoria.
I cannot recommend a visit to Tooroongo Falls highly enough. It is one of those places you will want to return to again and again.
